Life is unpredictable. Finances can be unpredictable along with it. Setbacks are apart of the journey to financial freedom. Maybe it’s an unexpected medical bill, a job loss, or a season where expenses outweigh income. Financial setbacks can feel discouraging and overwhelming, leaving us wondering if we’ll ever get ahead. But the truth is, setbacks aren’t an indication of failure. They are something that almost everyone has to go through at some point on their journey to financial freedom. With faith in Christ and resilient steps forward, you can overcome obstacles and rebuild stronger than before.
Introduction: Word of Encouragement
We have a lilac tree in our yard. Every summer for the past few years, even before we bought the house, an invasive species has overcome almost every lilac tree in our neighborhood. It slowly, throughout the lilac season, eats away at it and turns its leaves a dark brown. We’ve all tried to rid of it, but to no avail.
But here’s the thing that we’ve witnessed year after year. Somehow, someway, the lilac trees bloom stronger and more full the next year. They spend the off-season preparing themselves for the invasive species. And, when the time comes to show off their beautiful leaves, it always leaves us amazed.
In the same way that a lilac tree can become heartier in a season of setback, you too and learn, grow, and become stronger in your journey to financial freedom.
Remember Who Holds Your Future
Hint: it’s God. When financial struggles hit, it’s easy to spiral into fear. But Scripture reminds us in Jeremiah 29:11 that God has “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.” His plans for you are always good, and He is not surprised by your obstacles.
Your current setback isn’t the end of your story. It’s a chapter. It is where God’s faithfulness, goodness, and love can shine brightest in your life. Start by anchoring your heart in the One who provides, even when your bank account feels empty.
Here are some additional verses to hold onto during this season:
- Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established. Proverbs 16:3
- Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand. Proverbs 19:21
- For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. Isaiah 55:8-9
- Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. Proverbs 3:5
Reframe the Setback as Preparation/Redirection
Setbacks can feel overwhelming. But what if we stopped thinking about them as bad, and started looking at them as either preparation or redirection? Maybe the closed door is pushing you to better stewardship, new opportunities, or fresh perspective. Maybe God is using the setback to prepare you for something bigger in your life.
Ask yourself: What can I learn from this season?
When we choose to see our setbacks as opportunities to grow, it strengthens resilience. Instead of letting debt, loss, or mistakes define you, let them refine you.
Take Practical Steps Forward
Faith and resilience go hand-in-hand with action. Here are some practical ways to move forward:
- Spend time in the Word: Spend time each day with God, asking Him to make His path clear and learning from the One who holds all the answers.
- Reevaluate your budget: Cut out non-essential expenses and align your spending with your values.
- Prioritize debt repayment: Even small, consistent payments create momentum.
- Seek wise counsel: Talk with a financial advisor, a mentor, or someone who’s walked this road before.
- Look for new opportunities: A side hustle, exercising your skills, or fresh income stream can shift your trajectory.
These small steps, rooted in faith, begin to rebuild stability and posture your heart towards the Lord.
Guard Your Mind and Spirit
Financial setbacks can drain not just your wallet but your spirit. Fill your mind with encouragement from Scripture, prayer, and worship. Meditate on verses like Philippians 4:19: “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.”
When you feel fearful, replace those thoughts with God’s Word. Surround yourself with a community that speaks life and reminds you of God’s promises. Remember that this setback is not an identity, nor does it indicate failure. This is life, and God is walking with you.
Celebrate Small Wins
Resilience grows when we recognize progress, no matter how small. Did you pay off $50 of debt? Celebrate it. Did you stick to your budget this week? Thank God for it. Gratitude can completely shape the way that we walk in our faith, live our daily lives, and find peace in Christ. Celebrating small wins is more than just giving us a “boost” to our peace and joy. It pushes us forward and encourages us to keep going.
Final Encouragement
Setbacks happen. With faith in God’s provision and resilience in your daily actions, you can rise above financial struggles. Remember, your worth is not tied to your wealth, but to your identity in Christ. Keep pressing forward, one faithful step at a time. Your story isn’t over and the One who holds the pen promises freedom over your heart, soul, and mind.
